Costco New Business Model : "Price Gouging"

I have been a Costco member since its Price Club days. I had heard that it does not mark up more than 15% on any item until this month (July 2014). I have been getting my prescriptions filled at Costco since I have been a member. I have been using a generic eye drops for all these years. During last three years I didn't have drug insurance and paid cash. In December 2013, Costco charged about $30 for it. When i went for a refill in July 2014, I was asked to pay $125. I was shocked, I told them that it must be an error, the price can't be four times in a matter of 6 months. The pharmacist came over and said the price is correct and gave me a lecture on how so many drug prices have recently gone up by 300% and more. I told them that I need to talk to my doctor before I paid for it. Upon my online search I found exactly the same drug for $32 at a national chain in my neighborhood. If one business is making profit at $32, how obscene would be Costco profits at $125. Costco has been raising gas prices and probably using these tactics to boost its bottom line.

The 15% mark up you heard of is to cover its overhead (Employe wages, benefits, property taxes). Only profit Costco makes is on your membership card.

Costco tries very hard to negotiate with manufacturers about getting the lowest price possible, otherwise there is no point in shopping at Costco and they know that.

Look at the bigger picture before resorting to silly conclusions that a company would mark up an item 400% entirely out of "corporate greed". Take a Business 101 class at your local community college you fool.

Welcome to capitalism where a business can charge whatever they like, and you as the consumer can simply take your business elsewhere.

COSTCO MANAGER AND TRAINEES RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL

July 26 2014. location San Antonio Texas IH10 & UTSA BLVD. I went into COSTCO to receive my cash card for my 2% Cash back card on Executive membership that was due to me. This COSTCO location had called me, told me that COSTCO corporate had directed this location to give me a cash card for payment due to me. The people at the membership desk were very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. They promptly located the E-MAIL from corporate office, it told them exactly what was to be done. I was taken to A***N who was handed the E-Mail. A**N never looked at me or even said one word. A**N spun around with his back to me and started to read?? the e-mail. A**N then proceeded to look at the e-mail from COSTCO corporate, perplexed A**N the asked me, "you are purchasing a CASH CARD?". I said "No I am not, A**N said to me " this has to be paid for", still never ever looking at me or saying hello, I SAID" PLEASE LOOK AT THE E-MAIL FROM CORPORATE". He ignored me spun and walked to the membership desk. After waiting just watching his confusion grow. He came back never saying a word or even looking at me. Continuing to say "this has to be paid for"He called the manager M*****A. AFTER WAITING FOR A FEW more minutes. even though what they were to do was "clearly stated" in the e-mail from corporate. The manager ,M*****A came over with another person (also in training). AT THIS POINT NO ONE HAS EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED ME IN ANY WAY . SHE THE MANAGER PROCEEDED TO TRAIN HER EMPLOYEES ON THE REGISTER. I am standing there why they are trained on their job. When the manager completed her training session. "A***N SHOVED THE CARDS INTO MY HAND without a word or even looking at me. A***N turned his back on me and proceeded to chat with the manager and the other person. I leaned in and said " your welcome A***N. A***N turned his head for the first time in this whole event., and looked at me like i was from outer space and never said anything. Then M*****A, the manger proceeded to tell me that A**N did not mean anything by it. I told her do not like "snotty" people without manners. The manager M*****A told me It was not a big deal and started laughing. I told her "you think lack of manners is funny and how i was treated was funny". I told her "Where do they get you people with such lack of manners". I called the Regional Manager in Dallas and left 3 messages. WAITING.

Something is wrong here. Cash back refunds are sent by snail mail not email.

What is going on?

Positive Experience Review

I think costco is a nice store. I like their easy return policy and customers should ask to clarify possible scenarios to avoid painful memories. There are people who get attached to jewelry because it represents a wonderful memory (wedding), and I have to admit that I am one of them. And because I know I am that way, I like to make sure I pay extra money to preserve my antiques. Like getting insurance and asking a lot of questions. Maybe there is another ring that can be given to you at another very special anniversary or something and you can feel better :) Make it special!

It could have been labeled incorrectly. Happens often in any store- the employees manually enter the tags based on item number.

It may have been a different fish that looked similar enough.

Costco has a return on any item policy. Just take it back. You don't need a receipt.

The store has a record of purchase on your membership card.

Hope that helps.

We had NO problems on two separate cruises booked through CostCo

Booking was smooth and they we did the detailed check in with the cruise line. Costco saved us a lot of money, helped us select good rooms, and even offered an additional on board credit that could be refunded if not used. It was in out bank account before we got home. THANKS Costco. We are booking two more trips for 2015, and they will be through COSTco. Remember it is like shopping at Costco--if you are looking for a travel agent to handle all your details, this might not new for you. But if you are looking for value for money, check it out.

Costco review in Mayfield Heights, Ohio: No complaints!

Everyone who complained about the *** book "America" being taken off the shelves: I GUARANTEE you didn't go out and buy it. Wah wah wah. They don't sell every book. They listened to their shoppers and put it back out to sell. I love Costco! Great return policy. Great company that knows how to treat their employees well. Guess what!? You can even return your membership. SO, instead of sitting on this website complaining, why don't you walk right up to the membership counter and they'll refund you your membership in CASH! That way you can take your $55 and turn around and spend it at a beautiful Walmart. Cheers.

Have used this car wash probably 50 times on my Tacoma and my Lexus. Never had a problem.

I drive into the lot after the wash and clean water spots with a towel on door sills, trunk edges and tires, etc. Takes about 3 minutes. Wish it was closer to my home.

I think his scratches came from another time and another source. Love the car wash and all of Costco house brands.

I was also given a prescription by my doctor, I picked it up and when I read possible conflicts with other medications, I noticed it conflicted with one I was currently taking, I called my doctor, she called the pharmacy, then called me and told me to return it to the pharmacy, which I did, they took the original prescription, gave me the correct one, and adjusted the money I had already spent. So yes, things can be done, but there are laws governing what they are allowed to do.
